Syrah: Another Up and Coming Washington Red Wine

Several weeks ago I noted how well Washington State Cabernets are comparing with those produced in the rest of the world. Another red wine from Washington that is becoming increasingly popular and also worth considering is Syrah.

Many Washington Syrahs are packed with fruit flavors, have subtle touches of spiciness, and pair well with a variety of foods. In short, these are extremely easy to drink wines that I think you’ll find to be most enjoyable.

Here are a few Washington Syrahs that I’ve recently sampled:

null2003 San Juan Vineyards (about $23): While the 2002 vintage resembled an Old World-style Syrah with a smoky, earthy quality, the 2003 vintage displays much more fruit in a New World-style. Lots of juicy, cherry flavors with subtle oak and clove on the finish make this wine simply delicious. Gold medalist at the 2005 Tri-Cities Wine Festival.

2004 Rulo Winery (about $22): Another great Columbia Valley Syrah from this Walla Walla winery. Black fruit and sage in the nose, dark berry flavors and a finish of caramel and black pepper. The price is a steal for a Syrah of this caliber. If you’re unable to find it locally, Compass Wines in Anacortes has a good supply.

2003 Stephenson Cellars (about $29): I’m going to start calling David Stephenson “Mr. Syrah.” Although his previous releases of this varietal have been noteworthy, his 2003 vintage – which is just starting to hit the shelves – is mind-boggling. Incredible nose of violets with smoky undertones and lush flavors of blackberry, plum and cassis. The ultra-soft finish suggests dark chocolate and touches of clove. Available locally at the Zephyr Bistro and the Purple Smile. Only 220 cases were produced, so don’t delay in purchasing this truly remarkable wine.
