Segura Viudas: Top-Quality Cavas From an Area Rich in Tradition

Located in Spains’ Penedes region, Segura Viudas was founded in an area with winemaking roots that have been traced back over 800 years.

The winery itself was established in 1959, and those familiar with the Segura Viudas label have come to appreciate the winery’s reputation for producing consistently good sparkling wines at very affordable prices.

Here are a couple of recommendations for you to consider:

Segura Viudas Brut Rose’ Cava (about $12) – This tasty everyday sparkler opens with flavors and aromatics of fresh strawberries, canteloupe, and honeydew melon and finishes on a slightly creamy note that’s balanced with just the right amount of crisp acidity. It’s an excellent pairing partner will grilled shrimp or salmon at a price that’s practically unbeatable.

Segura Viudas Reserva Heredad Cava (about $25 to $30) – For starters, the medieval bottle design (a nod, in part, to the estate’s architecture) is a grand slam worth admiring. Inside the bottle, the wine is just as intriguing, with a lovely floral bouquet along with aromas of freshly-baked brioche. On the palate, generous flavors of baked apple and juicy pear predominate, with a full-bodied finish that carries an elegant quality as well.
